I have become a fan of Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series about a police chief in the Amish country of Ohio. I have now read the first six mysteries in the series--this is the third one chronologically--and I look forward to reading the seventh. Ms. Castillo's books are outstanding reading experiences for any mystery lover. In this one, Kate is investigating the apparently accidental deaths of an Amish farmer, his wife, and his brother from fumes in a manure pit. An autopsy, however, showed that at least one death was not accidental, and Kate and her officers had to figure out why anyone would want to kill these people, who was the prime target, and who did it. Ms. Castillo seldom if ever writes the kind of mysteries with lots of suspects who would all have reason to kill the deceased. Instead she presents a small number of possible perpetrators, none of whom appear to be criminals. In this case, I had a lot figured out with regard to who might have committed the crime, but there were still some major surprises. This is a good story, and I would recommend it without hesitation to all mystery readers. This is the third book in this series, and I loved it as much as I did the first. I am interested in the Amish, and I love mysteries. So, this series of books blends two of my reading interests seamlessly.Here, you have an Amish farming family with four children in which the parents and a visiting uncle meet a horrific death in the family barn. At first, it appears to be a terrible accident, but an examination by the coroner indicates that it is not. Moreover, there has been a rash of hate crimes against the Amish.
